Smart Kids Become Vegetarians?

from:

Sure, we all know that it's smart to be a vegetarian. But did you know that you're more likely to be vegetarian if you're already smart? It's true!

A British study has found that children with high IQs are more likely to become vegetarians as they grow up, meaning that smarter people are healthier overall. Catharine Gale of MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre of the University of Southampton and Southampton General Hospital co-authored the report, which was published in the British Medical Journal. Her conclusion - "Brighter people tend to have healthier dietary habits."

The researchers spoke to 8,000 men and women who were born in April 1970 and had had their IQ tested at age 10 as part of a British study. Interestingly, they found a link between high IQ at age 10 and being a vegetarian at age 30. Of the 8,000 participants, 366 said they were vegetarian (although 123 said they also ate fish or chicken.) Most of the vegetarians were educated women, although when all factors were considered it was high IQ that was most strongly connected with vegetarianism.

One of the reasons for the study was the number of recent studies which have found that vegetarianism is connected with lower cholesterol, reduced risk of obesity and heart disease - related studies have found that children with high IQs tend to live longer, and have less heart disease overall.

In relation to her study, Gale told reporters that "We know from other studies that brighter children tend to behave in a healthier fashion as adults. They're less likely to smoke, less likely to be overweight, less likely to have high blood pressure and more likely to take strenuous exercise. This study provides further evidence that people with a higher IQ tend to have a healthier lifestyle."

So ... is it true that vegetarians are smarter? Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States of America and a brilliant inventor, said of his own vegetarian lifestyle that "with this lighter repast, I made the greater progress, for greater clearness of head and quicker comprehension." Other famous vegetarians include Leonardo da Vinci, Plato, Pythagoras, Aristotle, and Albert Einstein - all pretty smart guys!

Other studies have shown links between intelligence and vegetarianism. Research done on vegetarian Seventh-Day Adventists have found lower rates of almost all major chronic diseases. They also live longer than meat-eaters. Most researchers conclude that smart people tend to be better educated, and that leads to making healthier choices - which includes giving up meat!
